A2L & Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) Transition Resources
The transition to refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP) is driven by worldwide initiatives to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated a switch to refrigerants with a GWP of 700 or less by January 1, 2025. The Canadian government enacted the Regulations Amending the Ozone-depleting Substances and Halocarbon Alternatives Regulations, which set a phasedown of HFC consumption from a baseline starting with a 10% reduction in 2019.
Further reductions are scheduled for 2024, 2029, and 2034, aiming for an 85% reduction by 2036. This aligns Canada’s efforts with global environmental goals and ensures compliance with international agreements such as the Kigali Amendment (Source: Canada.ca).
This means the HVAC/R industry is phasing down the production and consumption of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) refrigerants and is transitioning to low GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32.
